Wasps
How can I tell it's a wasp?
Wasps have black bodies with yellow or orange markings. They have two sets of wings, a narrow waist, and long, thin legs. They have less hair on the body than the typical bee. Wasps range in size, though they are typically between 1/4 inch and 1 inch. They have chewing mouthparts and prey on insects.
How do I avoid wasps?
Wasps hibernate during the winter, and as it gets warmer they love to set up homes in the siding of homes or in the eves. There are a number of ways to decrease your chances of having wasps around your home, though it doesn't guarantee they will not be there.
- Ensure trash lids are always closed tightly
- Cover foods (especially at barbecues and picnics)
- Inspect around the home for nests regularly
- Fill in any holes where it appears a wasp could make it's nest
